Air compressors are used in a wide range of business operations – from mom-and-pop auto-repair shops to tire-repair centers and industrial plants. But they often don’t receive the necessary maintenance and attention they deserve. The air compressor is the unsung hero in many commercial and industrial businesses, but is often ignored until there’s a major problem.

Through the adiabatic process, air compressors generate a high amount of heat. This is the same process used to ignite fuel in a diesel engine. Synthetic lubricants can handle much higher temperatures than their mineral counterparts. At extreme heat, mineral oils often break down and leave dangerous deposits that can damage vital components, resulting in impaired performance.

At very low temperatures, mineral oils can do the opposite. They thicken up and prevent proper lubrication. Both extremes can affect the performance, reliability and life of an air compressor.

Many air compressor manufacturers have their own range of lubricants, so, before you convert to a different type, it is important to address compatibility issues. This is when the technical advice of a professional oil supplier should be sought, because conversion involves flushing procedures and compatibility testing.
