In some areas there is a lot of competition between local oil companies, with several businesses in operation. The problem is these operations are not always of the same standard. Anyone can buy a single truck and go around calling themselves an oil company. But when the chips are down, will they be able to give you the service you need? Ask yourself these questions:
How long has the company been in operation? You really don’t want to sign up with a company with no track record of serving your community. Imagine if you have prepaid for a delivery, and then it suddenly folds – leaving you with no fuel and no refund.
Do they enter into a proper service level agreement with regular customers?Imagine the situation – it’s the middle of winter, and your heating oil is running critically low. You phone for an urgent delivery, but the oil company you are dealing with is not prepared or able to deliver because it’s too cold. Their drivers refuse to go out or the one old truck they have won’t start. Companies that give a commitment to service up front generally have the will and resources to back these promises up. If you ask about emergency service and the person you are dealing with seems hesitant or unwilling to commit, walk away.
Do they offer a range of price options and plans?Like in many businesses, flexibility and freedom of choice give the customer more control over their spending.
