Pennzoil, a leading oil company in the U.S., gives us the straight story about synthetic oil and debunks three common myths that you may have heard . . .
Part of engine oil’s job is to suspend the contaminants in it until your vehicle has its next oil change. When you consider all the contaminants thrown at engine oil, this is a big job. The fact is that full synthetic oil like Pennzoil Platinum or Pennzoil Ultra does a better job at preventing harmful deposits on engine surfaces than synthetic blends and conventional oils.
Myth # 1: Once You Change to Synthetic Oil, You Can’t Change Back
Not true. You can change back and forth at any time. However, it’s advisable to use the same type of oil when a top-up is needed. That way, you’ll get the best protection from the oil you choose.
Myth # 2: Synthetic Oil Will Void a Vehicle’s Warranty
Not true, says Pennzoil Oil Company. The only engines that expressly preclude the use of synthetic lubricants are certain Mazda rotary engines.
Myth # 3: Synthetic Oil Should Not Be Used in an Older Engine
Once again, not true. Synthetic oil will enhance engine protection in an older vehicle, just as it will for a new engine.
Essentially, what Pennzoil Oil Company is saying is that every engine generates contaminants such as carbon, nitric acid, sulfuric acid, and soot – they are inevitable side effects of the combustion process. In varying degrees, all of them end up in motor oil. The bottom line isn’t whether you need oil that cleans – rather how well it cleans.
