Low-level ethanol or bio diesel blends of 10% or less have been approved in America by manufacturers for use in all automobiles. When these blends are used, there is no obvious difference in the vehicle’s performance, apart from a minor reduction in fuel economy.
Any diesel engine can run on 100% bio diesel, although it is usually sold in lower blends of 2%, 5% or 20%. Theoretically, bio diesel should reduce torque, power and economy, but in practice, low-level blends are almost indistinguishable from traditional diesel.
Because of its superior lubricity, bio diesel can extend the lifespan of engine components and reduce wear and tear. Manufacturers have certified their engines to be operational on B5 and B20 bio diesel blends, both of which have met the requirements of the ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials). B5 is 95% diesel and 5% bio diesel, while B20 is 80% diesel and 20% bio diesel.
Flexible-Fuel Vehicles (FFVs):These are vehicles that can be fueled by E85 (blends containing up to 85% ethanol and straight gasoline. Therefore, if ethanol is not available, consumers can fill their tanks with gasoline. This choice has introduced a new type of competition in the fuel market. It may interest you to know that Henry Ford’s 1908 Model T was the first FFV. In fact, he was a strong advocator for ethanol even during the prohibition.
If, like many other Americans, you are curious about the possibility of converting your gasoline vehicle to a flexible-fuel vehicle, you’ll find plenty of information here.
