Kerosene oil heaters offer a simple, portable and cost-effective way to provide heating. They are often used for activities like camping or outdoor entertaining. Kerosene heaters are also sometimes used to provide supplementary heating in homes, when it is exceptionally cold, for example, or as a backup measure during power outages.
Like any other device that uses flammable fuel, has an open flame and surfaces that become very hot, kerosene heaters must be used with extreme caution and kept well maintained and clean at all times.
As kerosene heaters use direct combustion, they consume oxygen. Therefore, ventilation is very important. Many manufacturers of kerosene oil heaters recommend keeping a window near the heater cracked open a little to allow fumes to escape and a continuous supply of oxygen to enter the home.
