When it comes to lubricants like oil and grease, there are two main types; those made from petroleum and those made from synthetic materials. Blended or semi-synthetic lubricants are also available.

The answer to the question about which is better is – neither. It all depends on the application. Some engines perform better with one or the other type. For example, airplanes with jet engines are required to use synthetic oil, while those powered by piston equipment generally use petroleum oil.
