5 Tips for Nixing the Strong Smell of Kerosene Oil

If you use kerosene oil to power lamps, stoves, or lanterns in your home, you likely know how strong its smell can be. If kerosene oil isn’t stored properly, or if it spills on your floor, clothing or skin, getting that stubborn smell out can seem nearly impossible. But we’ve found the solution! Here are some easy tips to get rid of the smell of kerosene:

• Make sure all kerosene oil is stored properly. It should be kept in a fuel container that has never been used before and has a tight seal. It should also never be stored for longer than 3 months.
• If kerosene oil spills on an article of clothing, wash it with powerful detergent and dry it in the sun.
• If kerosene oil spills on the floor, clean it quickly, properly, and thoroughly. There are some cleaning products that are manufactured specifically to get rid of the kerosene smell.
• If kerosene oil is spilled on wood or carpet, it is best to hire a professional cleaning service.
• Alcohol can remove kerosene smell from your skin. You can also try a solution of ammonia and water, but be careful—using too much ammonia might create a bad reaction on your skin.
